The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano Zone, has issued a formal warning that it may initiate industrial action against the governments of Kaduna, Kano, and Jigawa. This move follows the persistent failure of these states to implement the 2025 agreement signed with federal authorities.
Comrade Abdulrazaq Ibrahim, the Zonal Coordinator, stated during a press conference at Bayero University, Kano, that while federal institutions have commenced the implementation process, state-owned universities in the region have failed to follow suit. The union highlighted that the Federal Government has already released funds for salary arrears, including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and other essential benefits.
ASUU noted that several other states across Nigeria have already adopted the agreement, and they are now demanding similar compliance from the administrations in Kaduna, Kano, and Jigawa. Beyond the 2025 agreement, the union is demanding the payment of withheld salaries from a previous strike period and the clearance of backlogs regarding third-party deductions and pension contributions.
The union also addressed broader national issues, expressing alarm over rising insecurity, economic strain, and environmental challenges. They urged government officials to prioritize public safety and economic stability. ASUU warned that ignoring their demands threatens the academic calendar and called upon stakeholders, including students and parents, to intervene before the situation escalates into a full-scale shutdown of universities.
