The State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, Commandant Maku Olatunde, has urged the public to remain vigilant and discerning when approached by individuals claiming to be Civil Defence officers.

Comdt. Maku made this statement on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the State Command Headquarters in Awka, through Superintendent of Corps Edwin Okadigbo, the command’s head of media and tactical operations. This announcement followed the parade of a suspect who was impersonating a Civil Defence officer to deceive, extort, and commit fraudulent activities against unsuspecting citizens in Anambra State.

Maku provided an account of how the suspect was apprehended, saying;

“On  Tuesday October 15, 2024 at about 1300hrs , operatives of the command on routine patrol responded to intelligence regarding the suspect’s suspicious activities around Aroma in Awka.

Acting on this information, the team swung into action and apprehended the suspect; Emmanuel Oche , male, aged 55 from Agila Town in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State dressed in an NSCDC uniform”

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Emmanuel Oche, the impersonator, exploited his fake status as a Civil Defence officer to intimidate and exploit innocent victims.

During questioning, Oche shockingly confessed to purchasing the NSCDC uniform from a second-hand clothing seller in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, highlighting the extent of his deceitful tactics.

In response, the State Commandant has instructed the Investigation and Intelligence Department to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the source of the uniform and the motives behind Oche’s impersonation.

Comdt. Maku emphasized that the suspect will be charged in court once the investigation is complete.

On Monday, a meeting of EU foreign ministers reportedly approved a 16th package of sanctions against Russia while saying a swift casefire that favors Moscow will not be accepted. However, Hungary, whose leader Viktor Orban has remained close to Russian President Vladimir Putin and has persistently complicated EU efforts to support Ukraine, said it will not back further sanctions. The country’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto also said his country will not agree to a boost in EU military aid as US President Donald Trump continues his push to force Ukraine to agree to a peace deal with Russia. US officials met their Russian counterparts last week, while Trump and Zelenskyy have embarked on a bitter spat via the media, with the US leader accusing Kyiv of starting the war and questioning the Ukrainian president’s legitimacy. Trump’s peace plan, which appears designed to illustrate his self-appointed role as a global dealmaker, faces resistance on both sides. Russia said on Monday that the quick end to the war is “unacceptable”. A ceasefire without a long-term settlement “is the path to a swift resumption of fighting and a resumption of the conflict with even more serious consequences, including consequences for Russian-US relations,” Moscow’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said, according to the state-run RIA Novosti news agency. Meanwhile, Ukraine signalled on Sunday that a contentious proposal that would hand Washington $500bn worth of profits from Ukrainian rare minerals has now been taken off the table, and that talks on a different deal are progressing. Zelenskyy also told a forum in Kyiv that he would resign his post if that meant peace was achieved.
