Nnedimma and Sonny Onyegbula in Contentious Divorce Over Abuse Claims

A Nigerian couple based in the U.S. is locked in a fierce legal battle for divorce at a Lagos High Court, trading claims of domestic abuse and misconduct after 25 years of marriage.

A Lagos State High Court is currently presiding over a high-stakes divorce case involving U.S.-based lawyer Nnedimma Onyegbula and her husband, Sonny Onyegbula. The couple, married for 25 years, is seeking a legal end to their union while exchanging serious accusations of physical violence, infidelity, and emotional manipulation.

Nnedimma Onyegbula claims she endured years of physical assaults, financial control, and verbal abuse. She stated that these incidents worsened her chronic health conditions, including Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Fibromyalgia. Among her specific claims, she alleged her husband abandoned her at a hospital in 2012 following an assault and failed to protect her during an incident involving his family members in 2014. Additionally, she accused him of emotional cruelty and misrepresenting her financial contributions.

Sonny Onyegbula has categorically denied these accusations, calling them false and damaging. He maintains that he was a supportive husband who funded the household and their children’s education. Furthermore, he alleged that his wife was the aggressor in several domestic disputes, citing incidents where she reportedly destroyed household property and attacked him physically. He also dismissed rumors of infidelity as entirely baseless.

Regarding finances, the respondent confirmed a mutual agreement to split proceeds from a jointly owned property at a 65-35 ratio. However, he rejected his wife’s demand for monthly maintenance, asserting that she is financially self-sufficient. Justice O. Ogunjobi has adjourned the matter until October 2 to continue hearing the case.
