Kano Appellate Court Requests Reference Texts from Sheikh Abduljabbar in Blasphemy Appeal

An appellate court in Kano has mandated that Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasir Kabara produce the literature cited in his initial defense as his appeal against a death sentence for blasphemy continues.

The Kano State High Court, functioning as an appellate body, has ordered the legal representatives of Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasir Kabara to submit the specific scholarly texts he referenced during his initial trial. The cleric is currently challenging the capital punishment imposed on him by the Upper Sharia Court at Kofar Kudu after he was found guilty of committing blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

Defense attorneys petitioned the court to overturn the earlier verdict and acquit their client of all charges. In contrast, legal counsel for the Kano State Government requested that the tribunal affirm the trial court’s decision to maintain the sentence.

Justice Nasir Saminu, the presiding judge, instructed the defense team to provide the materials originally used to support their arguments so that the appeal process could proceed. The court noted that a date for the final verdict will be announced at a later time.
