Abuja Federal High Court Denies El-Rufai’s Request to Ease Bail Terms

A Federal High Court in Abuja has denied Nasir El-Rufai’s plea to modify his bail conditions, while the DSS has officially concluded its case against him in an ongoing wiretapping trial.

Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, has failed in his attempt to secure a relaxation of his current bail conditions. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja denied the application on Tuesday, upholding the original requirements set by the court.

Represented by Paul Erokoro, SAN, the former governor had argued that the existing terms were excessively demanding. Specifically, the defense challenged the necessity for two level 17 civil servants with property in Maitama or Asokoro, alongside formal letters of attestation from the Kaduna state traditional council, labeling these conditions as unreasonable. The prosecution, led by Oluwole Aladedoye, SAN, countered that such qualified individuals are available and contended that the conditions remain appropriate.

In a separate development, the Department of State Services concluded its case against El-Rufai regarding allegations of illegal wiretapping. With the prosecution resting its side, the defense team announced plans to file a no-case submission, asserting that the government’s evidence is insufficient. Justice Abdulmalik has scheduled September 22 for the hearing regarding the no-case motion.
