Nigeria’s judicial system has officially transitioned away from paper-based filing, adopting digital technology to eliminate long-standing barriers to timely justice. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Tomori Kekere-Ekun, made the announcement at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, confirming that the new electronic filing protocols take effect immediately.
The Chief Justice introduced the Nigerian Case Management System (NCMS), stating that the modernization of legal processes is essential for global competitiveness. She emphasized that 21st-century justice requires institutions that are transparent, efficient, and accessible. By adopting these digital tools, the judiciary aims to improve case management and ensure that dispute resolutions are handled with greater speed.
Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Barrister Kabiru Akanbi, confirmed the establishment of a digital registry at the apex court. He urged litigants and legal professionals to adapt to these new procedural changes. This initiative is supported by the Supreme Court (Mandatory Upload of Electronic Copies of Processes, Records of Appeal and Other Matters) Practice Directions, 2026.
