The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has confirmed that the earth tremor experienced in parts of the Federal Capital Territory on August 4 caused no structural harm. Director-General Prof. Segun Ige announced this during a recent press briefing in Abuja.
Reports indicate the tremor was felt at the Defence Intelligence Agency’s logistics unit, Mambila Barracks, sections of the NNPC Towers, and areas within the Central Business District. The Utako seismic station recorded the event, which lasted five seconds and occurred at a depth of one kilometre. Officials classified it as a minor seismic incident.
Prof. Ige explained that the agency’s assessment team found no foundation cracks or building damage. He described the event as a micro-tremor that lacked the intensity to threaten safety or property. While the agency operates five monitoring stations across the country, Ige noted that current infrastructure is insufficient for comprehensive coverage.
He advocated for increased government funding to expand the monitoring network and suggested that quarry operators be required to install seismic meters at their sites. Furthermore, he recommended that developers consult the NGSA regarding soil and rock stability before initiating large-scale construction projects like dams or skyscrapers. He concluded by stressing the importance of enforcing seismic building codes, training staff on modern technology, and educating the public on safety protocols.
