A fatal shooting involving US immigration agents occurred on Monday in Biddeford, Maine, resulting in the death of a 26-year-old Colombian man. This event follows another deadly encounter involving an ICE agent in Texas just one week prior, raising further questions regarding the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policies.
Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau confirmed ICE’s involvement in the fatality. While state police and the FBI have launched investigations, Governor Janet Mills noted that authorities are working to uncover the full circumstances. Witness Lucas Scott reported hearing multiple gunshots as agents surrounded a vehicle.
Advocacy groups, including the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, identified the victim as a worker with legal authorization, though they have not released his name. Senator Angus King stated that he was informed by Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin that the victim was the target of an immigration arrest warrant. King criticized the apparent lack of body cameras worn by the agents and called for a transparent inquiry.
The Department of Homeland Security has yet to provide an official statement. Meanwhile, local leaders, including Mayor Liam LaFountain, have addressed community concerns regarding the incident. ICE continues to face significant scrutiny for its enforcement tactics across the country.
