Nasarawa Authorities Detain Chinese Nationals and Others for Unsanctioned Mining

Nasarawa Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe led a security operation to arrest three Chinese nationals and others for conducting illegal mining in the Kokona Local Government Area.

Emmanuel Akabe, the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, spearheaded a security operation that resulted in the detention of three Chinese citizens and several other individuals. The arrests occurred in the Amba region of the Kokona Local Government Area, where the group was accused of conducting forbidden mining operations.

During the raid, security forces confiscated various pieces of mining equipment, cartons of suspected mineral resources, and surveillance cameras used to watch over the site. Akabe stated that he directed the mission personally after receiving multiple reports that the state’s suspension on mining activities was being ignored.

The Deputy Governor expressed frustration that foreign nationals were operating within the state without proper documentation. While he acknowledged that mining regulation falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, he emphasized that Nasarawa State is committed to upholding the law and protecting the local community. He noted that the site lacked necessary environmental impact assessments and community agreements.

Through an interpreter, the apprehended Chinese nationals claimed they had been active at the location since last year, working under instructions from their superiors based in Abuja. Officials confirm that an investigation is underway and those involved will face legal prosecution.
