Newcastle Joins Race for Osimhen

Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Victor Osimhen in 2025, with their owners, the Public Investment Fund, ready to trigger the Nigerian striker’s £113 million release clause.

Newcastle are one of several clubs that will be presented with the opportunity to acquire the 25-year-old striker, who is currently on loan at Turkish club Galatasaray from Napoli.

Osimhen, previously with Lille, has been in outstanding form since joining Galatasaray in September, scoring eight goals in nine appearances across all competitions. This includes six goals in just six Turkish Super Lig matches.

His most recent performance was in a 3-2 victory over Samsunspor, where he netted twice to help maintain Galatasaray’s unbeaten streak and extend their lead at the top of the Turkish Super Lig by six points.

Fenerbahçe manager Jose Mourinho, who has previously praised Osimhen’s abilities, is confident that the Nigerian striker is worth a considerable investment.

“Osimhen is a fantastic player. He is a player that if I was in a club with the potential to pay £70-75m, I would buy,” Mourinho said.

The Portuguese manager’s admiration for the former Lille player has reportedly led Fenerbahçe to consider making a bid that surpasses Galatasaray’s proposed €50m permanent transfer fee.

However, Napoli’s Sporting Director, Giovanni Manna, has established a minimum price for any potential buyer.

“There are many clubs interested in Victor Osimhen. Galatasaray cannot take Osimhen if it does not pay a net fee of €75m,” Manna stated.

Newcastle’s interest follows a quiet summer transfer window, with manager Eddie Howe eager to bolster his attacking options.

The idea of pairing Osimhen with current striker Alexander Isak has excited fans, though financial regulations and sustainability rules at St James’ Park could complicate any potential deal.

Chelsea, along with several Saudi Pro League clubs, continue to monitor the striker after unsuccessful attempts to sign him last summer, setting the stage for a competitive race for his signature in 2025.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe Vice President Acun Ilıcalı appears less inclined to pursue Osimhen, citing the club’s existing forward options.

“There is Dzeko, there is En Nesyri, and there is also Cenk. Who will play?” Ilıcalı questioned during a recent television appearance.
