Brigadier General Buba Marwa, the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, announced that the agency intercepted more than two billion tramadol tablets over the last year and a half. This achievement was the result of strategic intelligence operations conducted alongside foreign law enforcement, primarily in India and Pakistan.
Speaking during a visit to the Lekki Free Trade Zone and Lekki Deep Sea Port, Marwa warned criminal groups against utilizing Nigerian ports for illicit trade. He highlighted that the NDLEA has improved its surveillance technology and is coordinating closely with the Nigeria Customs Service and NAFDAC to block trafficking routes.
The agency head emphasized that the fight against narcotics requires societal involvement, not just government action. He pointed to the recent destruction of a methamphetamine lab in Ogun State as a major victory, noting the site could have generated $360 million in illegal revenue if left operational. Ongoing legal proceedings against the suspects involved, including foreign nationals, remain a priority for the agency.
Marwa also urged parents to stay observant regarding their children’s behavior, encouraging early medical intervention for signs of substance abuse. The NDLEA continues to push for legislative amendments that would impose harsher sentences on drug traffickers, aiming to bolster the national strategy against organized crime.
