The National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) has labeled the planned registration fee hike for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) senior secondary exams as far too expensive. Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, the Board of Trustees Chairman, explained that the current economic climate makes the proposed jump of over 75 percent unsustainable for families.
Ogunbanjo argued that any necessary adjustments due to inflation should be limited to roughly 25 percent. He warned that imposing such a large cost could lead to many students being unable to register for their final exams. The association is urging officials to lower the proposed rates to avoid disenfranchising students.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has taken a neutral stance on the matter. National President Audu Titus Amba stated that since the union focuses on the welfare of educators, the financial decision rests solely with parents. The NUT plans to hold a press conference this coming Monday to discuss broader trends within the education sector.
