UNICROSS Strike: ASUU and Cross River Government Schedule Resolution Talks

ASUU and the Cross River State government are preparing for negotiations to end a 45-day strike at UNICROSS that stems from unresolved welfare and financial grievances.

Academic activities at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) remain halted as the institution marks 45 days of industrial action. The local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced an upcoming meeting with state representatives to address the ongoing deadlock.

Dr. Patrick Ushie, the ASUU chapter chairman, confirmed during a recent interview in Calabar that the union received an official invitation from a government-appointed technical committee. In response to the committee’s request, union officials delivered a comprehensive report outlining their specific grievances on Tuesday.

While Dr. Ushie expressed optimism that the upcoming discussions might lead to a suspension of the strike, he maintained that the union remains committed to its position until all terms are satisfied. The industrial action, which began on May 19, involves 11 primary demands including the payment of outstanding salaries, wage arrears, and the remittance of over N11.9 million in check-off dues owed to the national organization.
