The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially paused the strike that began on May 19, 2026. This resolution comes directly after Governor Bassey Otu intervened in the dispute.
During an emergency meeting held Tuesday at the Calabar campus, union members voted to end the industrial action that had stalled school operations. This choice followed multiple discussions between state officials, university leadership, and union representatives.
Governor Otu facilitated a private meeting last week with key figures, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Francisca Bassey, Calabar Zonal Coordinator Dr. Ikechukwu Igwenyi, and branch chairperson Dr. Patrick Ushie. Before this gathering, the governor held separate talks with student representatives and school administrators to find a path toward peace.
Reports from the UNICROSS media office indicate that the union halted the protest after receiving guarantees from the governor. The university administration noted that this outcome highlights a shared dedication to peaceful labor relations. The school also expressed gratitude to students and staff for their patience during the shutdown. Classes are set to resume immediately, with further details regarding the final settlement to be shared at a later date.
