Nanny Receives $2.78 Million After Boss Secretly Filmed Her with Hidden Camera in Smoke Alarm
A live-in nanny has been awarded £2 million after her fast food mogul employer secretly recorded nude videos of her by hiding a camera inside a smoke detector.
Kelly Andrade, 25, sued 35-year-old Michael Esposito for filming her while she lived with him and his family in Staten Island, New York.
Esposito, a father of four, was arrested after Andrade alleged he tried to force his way into her room when he realized she had discovered the device and the memory card containing “hundreds” of clips.
A Manhattan jury has now awarded the au pair $780,000 in emotional distress damages against Esposito and his wife, Danielle, along with $2,000,000 in punitive damages against him.
Esposito, who owns three LaRosa Grill franchises, was taken into custody on suspicion of illegal surveillance, which carries a maximum sentence of four years.
However, he was released on the condition that he complete two years of probation and counseling.
Ms. Andrade’s attorney previously criticized the punishment as a “slap on the wrist.”
Speaking to the New York Post, the nanny expressed her frustration: “It’s not enough for everything I’ve been through over these three years. It’s not enough.
“I was angry because the damage he caused me is irreversible.”
In her lawsuit, the Colombian national detailed spending hundreds of hours training after being hired by Cultural Care Au Pair and sent to work in the U.S.
She shared with the Post that she was excited about the opportunity to learn English while working in America.
However, she became suspicious after noticing Esposito frequently adjusting the smoke detector in her bedroom, saying it “was constantly being repositioned.”
After several weeks on the job, she examined the device more closely and discovered the hidden camera inside.
She described having to escape through a window when Esposito returned home and began banging on her door.
According to the lawsuit, police later discovered “hundreds of recordings” of her “nude and/or dressing/undressing” on the device.
