Luigi Mangione, the man charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has been photographed for the first time in an orange jumpsuit following his arrest.

The 26-year-old was taken into custody on Monday, December 9, at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a five-day nationwide manhunt.

Mangione is accused of shooting 50-year-old Brian Thompson from behind on a New York City sidewalk, outside a Hilton hotel where Thompson had been attending a shareholder conference.

After his arrest, Mangione was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery, and providing false identification. However, Manhattan prosecutors have since obtained an arrest warrant for murder, which is expected to expedite his extradition to New York.

Court officials have reported that Luigi Mangione has not yet secured an attorney to comment on the charges against him. When asked at his arraignment on Monday whether he required a public defender, Mangione requested to address the issue at a later date.

Mangione was apprehended in Altoona, Pennsylvania, approximately 230 miles (370 kilometers) west of New York City, after a McDonald’s customer recognized him and alerted an employee, according to authorities.

At the time of his arrest, Mangione was sitting at a back table, wearing a blue medical mask and looking at a laptop. When approached by officers, he initially provided a fake ID. However, when questioned about his recent visits to New York, Mangione reportedly became silent and began to shake, as noted in the police criminal complaint.

When Luigi Mangione lowered his mask at the officers’ request, rookie Officer Tyler Frye recognized him immediately, saying, “We knew that was our guy.”

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Mangione was carrying the same type of firearm used in the killing of Brian Thompson. He was also found with the same fake ID the shooter had used to check into a New York hostel, along with a passport and additional fraudulent identification.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny further stated that Mangione possessed a three-page handwritten document that expressed “ill will toward corporate America.”

Brian Thompson, 50, was tragically killed last Wednesday as he walked alone to a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference.
