The Federal Ministry of Education has issued a formal directive to the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), requiring the immediate termination of 24 aide appointments. According to a leaked document from June 25, 2026, these hirings violated established due process and federal university regulations.
Signed by Dr. Kareem O. L., the Acting Director of University Education, on behalf of the Minister, the letter identifies these appointments as irregular. The government’s decision followed an analysis of a university memorandum dated June 22, 2026. The ministry concluded that the selection process lacked transparency and failed to align with standard administrative procedures.
The Vice-Chancellor has been ordered to reverse these decisions immediately and submit proof of compliance to the ministry. Additionally, he has been summoned to Abuja for a June 29 meeting to address these concerns and discuss broader issues regarding institutional accountability and regulatory adherence.
This intervention suggests increased federal oversight of university governance. The National Universities Commission (NUC) has also received a copy of the correspondence. To date, neither FUTO leadership nor ministry officials have issued a public statement regarding the directive, though the situation has sparked significant discussion among academic stakeholders regarding administrative conduct.
