ASUU Bauchi Zone Criticizes Gombe and Plateau States Over Unfulfilled 2025 Pact

ASUU’s Bauchi Zone warns of industrial action in Gombe and Plateau states due to the ongoing failure of local governments to adopt the 2025 federal-union agreement.

The Bauchi Zonal branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has claimed that the state governments of Gombe and Plateau have neglected to enact the 2025 agreement established between the federal authorities and the union. The union cautioned that this lack of action risks sparking labor strikes at the impacted institutions.

Zonal Coordinator Timothy-Aku Namo highlighted the situation during a briefing at Gombe State University. He noted that despite the December 23, 2025, accord, both Gombe State University and Plateau State University have ignored the requirements of the deal. Namo stated that the state governments’ inaction has significantly damaged lecturer morale and negatively impacted staff welfare.

While the federal government has distributed funds for salaries and established a monitoring committee, many states have failed to comply. Some officials have even incorrectly suggested the agreement only binds the federal government. A June 21, 2026, forensic audit confirmed that only Sa’adu Zungur University and Ekiti State University have fully adopted the terms among the institutions assessed. Namo urged state leadership to resolve these grievances to prevent further instability.
