Academic success is on the rise across Scotland as students receive their latest exam grades. Over 148,000 learners collected marks for National, Higher, Advanced Higher, and Skills for Work qualifications. This year marks the first set of results overseen by Qualifications Scotland, the organization established to replace the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
Pass rates saw across-the-board growth, with National 5 scores reaching 79.2%, Highers rising to 76.7%, and Advanced Highers climbing to 77.6%. Furthermore, a record-breaking 120,485 vocational and technical qualifications were earned, reflecting an 9.1% increase from the previous year. Ucas reported that a record number of Scottish applicants have secured university or college placements.
Education Secretary Màiri McAllan praised the performance, highlighting the dedication of both pupils and staff. While the attainment gap between students from the least and most deprived areas showed a slight reduction, it remains a significant concern for the government. Officials noted that the gap at National 5 level dropped to 15.6 percentage points.
Critics remain vocal regarding the state of the education system. Scottish Conservative MP Andrew Bowie pointed to school violence and staffing shortages as barriers to student success. Meanwhile, the Scottish Greens advocated for a shift toward continuous assessment models, and the Educational Institute of Scotland emphasized that the persistent attainment gap requires urgent attention.
