Ekperipke Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), has announced that President Bola Tinubu has directed the conversion of filling stations across Nigeria into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) outlets to promote cleaner and more affordable energy alternatives.

During a press briefing at the State House following a federal executive council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, Ekpo emphasized Tinubu’s commitment to expanding the use of CNG, highlighting its safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits compared to traditional fuels.

“We are aware that the president has established a presidential committee on CNG, and he has charged us to ensure that most filling stations across the country are converted into CNG stations,” Ekpo said.

He also mentioned that the government would provide access to conversion kits to help Nigerians modify their vehicles to use CNG.

Ekpo noted the significant savings associated with CNG, explaining that while petrol can cost as much as N1,000 per litre, CNG is priced at N200 per standard cubic meter, resulting in considerable cost savings.

This initiative aligns with Tinubu’s recent remarks, suggesting that Nigerians can either continue purchasing petrol at N1,000 per litre or opt for CNG at N200 per standard cubic meter.

Ekpo concluded by expressing confidence in the government’s efforts to promote the CNG initiative throughout the country, enabling Nigerians to take advantage of the abundant natural gas resources available.
