May Day: ACCI Advocates For Social Justice And Decent Work
The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has urged the government, businesses, and civil society to collaborate in promoting policies that ensure decent employment, safeguard workers’ rights, and encourage equitable growth across all sectors of the economy.
In a statement released to mark the 2025 International Workers’ Day, the chamber emphasized that social justice and economic growth must go hand in hand, advocating for all Nigerians to have access to fair job opportunities and respectful treatment in the workplace.
The statement, signed by Olayemi John-Mensah, Media and Strategy Officer of the ACCI, commended Nigerian workers for their resilience, dedication, and significant contributions to national development.
International Workers’ Day, observed annually on May 1st, celebrates the role of workers and labor movements in shaping more equitable societies. This year’s global theme, “Social Justice and Decent Work,” highlights the urgent need to create inclusive, fair, and safe work environments that uphold the rights and dignity of all workers.
In his message for the occasion, ACCI President Emeka Obegolu praised Nigerian workers for their steadfast commitment, hard work, and resilience in the face of economic and structural challenges. He described them as the foundation of national progress and the pillars of family stability.
“Today is a celebration of the hardworking and dedicated individuals who keep our economy running. Nigerian workers have remained steadfast, contributing not only to the growth of their families but to the advancement of our nation. Their never-dying spirit and work ethic reflect the strength of our people,” Obegolu stated.
He further emphasized that workers are not limited to the formal sector but also include artisans, entrepreneurs, and individuals in the informal economy, all of whom work tirelessly every day to earn an honest living and make valuable contributions to society.
The ACCI president also called on the government at all levels to enact policies that support decent work, fair wages, and safe working conditions, stressing that the welfare of workers is essential for achieving sustainable economic development.
“As a Chamber that represents the interests of the business community, we believe that productivity thrives in an environment where workers are treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. We therefore advocate for robust labour policies that bridge the gap between legislative intentions and real workplace realities, particularly in the informal sector,” he added.
Emphasizing the 2025 theme, Obegolu highlighted that social justice and economic growth must go hand in hand, ensuring that every Nigerian has access to opportunities for decent employment and fair treatment in the workplace.
He also conveyed his warm wishes to all Nigerian workers, particularly the staff of the ACCI and the wider Nigerian Chamber movement, recognizing their dedication and invaluable contributions to the nation’s economic progress.
“On behalf of the Executive Council and members of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I wish all workers a happy and fulfilling International Workers’ Day. Your efforts power the engine of our economy, and today we celebrate your achievements.”
