Manchester City’s Matheus Nunes Arrested for Taking Fan’s Phone in Nightclub Bathroom
Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone in a Madrid nightclub.
The 26-year-old Portuguese player was detained in the early hours of September 8 at La Riviera nightclub and taken to a local police station for questioning.
According to Spanish daily El Mundo, the arrest occurred around 5:30 a.m. after Nunes was accused of taking the phone from a 58-year-old man who attempted to take a photo of him without permission in the club’s toilets.
It is alleged that Nunes snatched the phone in a fit of anger and refused to return it.
Police arrested him after being called to the club and confirming that he still had the phone in his possession.
The former Wolves player was reportedly handcuffed at the scene before being taken to a National Police station in Arganzuela, Madrid. He was released hours later following the intervention of a lawyer.
El Mundo reported that he is expected to face charges and stand trial over the incident. A spokesman for the National Police in Madrid confirmed that a Portuguese national was arrested on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone but did not confirm whether the suspect was Nunes.
A well-placed source indicated that the matter will now proceed to court. Nunes had been in Madrid with friends after not being called up by Portugal for international duty last month.
