Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee Strips Mike Ozekhome of SAN Status

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee has suspended Professor Mike Ozekhome from his Senior Advocate of Nigeria rank pending the outcome of ongoing disciplinary proceedings.

Professor Mike Ozekhome, a prominent constitutional attorney and human rights advocate, has had his Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) title suspended. This decision followed the 173rd General Meeting of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC).

In an official announcement, LPPC Secretary Kabiru Eniola Akanbi, who also serves as the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, cited Paragraph 26(6) of the guidelines governing the SAN designation as the basis for this action. Ozekhome remains suspended while his case undergoes a formal review by the LPPC’s Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee.

The committee noted that this move is necessary to preserve the reputation and honor associated with the SAN rank. Consequently, Ozekhome is prohibited from using the title or identifying himself as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria until the disciplinary process concludes. The LPPC emphasized its ongoing dedication to maintaining rigorous professional ethics and public trust within the Nigerian legal system.
