Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Bayo Ojo, SAN, has honored the legacy of the late Professor Alfred Kasunmu, SAN. Ojo characterized the late legal icon as an exceptional educator and statesman who exerted a lasting influence on Nigeria’s legal framework and public life.
Professor Kasunmu passed away on August 9, 2026, at age 92. Reflecting on their past, Ojo recounted his time as a student under Kasunmu at the University of Lagos in 1974. He credited his former Dean with fostering an environment that encouraged critical, independent thought and intellectual growth.
According to Ojo, the late professor balanced profound legal expertise with humility and grace. He noted that Kasunmu utilized his knowledge to clarify complex issues rather than intimidate students. As the Dean of the University of Lagos Law Faculty between 1973 and 1975, Kasunmu was instrumental in establishing high academic standards.
The Kasunmu family officially announced his peaceful death following a distinguished life. Born in 1934, the professor received his foundational legal education at University College London. After his 1964 call to the Nigerian Bar, he pursued a significant academic career, notably serving as a founding lecturer at the University of Ife, now known as Obafemi Awolowo University.
