The London Fire Brigade reported that the incident, which began shortly before 18:30 BST near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street, has generated a heavy volume of smoke. Residents in the vicinity are urged to keep doors and windows shut to minimize exposure, while motorists are requested to avoid local streets, including Wood Street and Shernhall Street, due to ongoing road closures.
As a precaution, the Weaver Overground line has faced partial closures. Two local rest centres have been established for those displaced by the fire. Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy acknowledged the impact on hundreds of residents, expressing gratitude to the community for providing food and water to those in need. While the specific cause of the ignition remains undetermined, crews continue to work on site to bring the situation under control.
