On Tuesday, Abuja was struck by another earth tremor that impacted buildings across a four-kilometre radius. The seismic event, which lasted for five seconds, was recorded by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) at a depth of one kilometre.
Lara Owoeye-Wise, Special Assistant to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, confirmed the incident in a statement. Minister Dele Alake, who is presently in Washington DC meeting with American investors, has ordered the NGSA to submit hourly reports on seismic activity to ensure appropriate oversight and response.
The NGSA classified the incident as a minor occurrence, measuring between I and II on the Mercalli intensity scale. Officials stated that such surface tremors are generally harmless to structural integrity, causing only brief vibrations and psychological unease among the populace. The Minister emphasized that emergency protocols are active and encouraged the public to continue their daily routines without panic while monitoring continues.
