Lamine Yamal Dismisses Messi Comparisons After Stunning Champions League Display

Barcelona’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal, has made it clear that he does not see himself on the same level as club legend Lionel Messi, despite his growing influence on the pitch.

The 17-year-old forward was instrumental in Barcelona’s 3-3 draw against Club Brugge on Champions League matchday four, scoring a superb equaliser to make it 2-2 before forcing an own goal that briefly gave his side the lead.

Speaking after the game, Yamal humbly dismissed comparisons with Messi, who remains the benchmark for Barcelona excellence.

“Messi has scored thousands of goals like this, so I can’t compare myself to him,” Yamal said, as quoted by Barca Blaugranes. “I’m just trying to improve and go my own way, and I hope to score more goals like this in the future.”

Reflecting on Barcelona’s overall performance, Yamal admitted there was room for improvement.

“We are Barça, and we always have to win,” he said. “It’s hard to win when you concede three goals. That’s what we need to improve. But we’re already thinking about the next league match.”

Describing his goal, the young star added, “It was a very quick play — Fermín backheeled it to me. I tried my best. I’m just sad we couldn’t get the win. Let’s hope for next time.”

Yamal also addressed recent rumours regarding his fitness and mindset, saying talk of injury and unhappiness was unfounded.

“There’s been a lot of talk about my pubalgia and that I was sad. It was all lies. I’m working hard and enjoying my football. This is where I feel best.”

Finally, he brushed off the jeers he sometimes receives from opposition supporters.

“If they boo me, it’s because they know I do my job well on the field. I don’t worry about it.”
