The Lagos State Government has launched a controlled demolition of the building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, that was previously affected by fire. This operation is being managed by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, stated that the decision to tear down the structure follows a thorough structural integrity assessment. The project is being executed according to global safety and disaster management standards to ensure public health remains protected.
Authorities have declared the site and its vicinity a hazardous zone. All commercial activities, including trading and parking, are prohibited in the area until it is deemed safe. Security teams have cordoned off the location, and warning signs have been installed to keep the public at a safe distance from falling debris.
The demolition contractor is performing final checks to ensure adherence to safety protocols. Dust suppression measures and traffic management plans are currently active. All workers on-site are required to use personal protective equipment, and all machinery has been verified for operational safety.
Various agencies, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Nigeria Police Force, are coordinating the effort. While acknowledging the business significance of Martins Street, officials stressed that these actions are vital for public safety. Residents are encouraged to report any emergencies by dialing 112 or 767.
