Kaduna Begins Full Reconstruction Of Ahmadu Bello Stadium To Meet International Standards
The Kaduna State Government has commenced the long-anticipated full reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, aiming to transform the 61-year-old facility into a world-class sports complex capable of hosting continental and international events.
This development comes after the Federal Government formally handed over ownership of the stadium to the state, following years of lobbying by previous administrations.
During an inspection on Wednesday, Commissioner of Information-designate Ahmed Maiyaki expressed dismay at the stadium’s deteriorated condition, noting its cracked terraces, faded seating, and overgrown pitches.
“This facility is not fit for national, let alone international, competitions,” he stated, adding that Governor Uba Sani’s vision is to deliver an international-standard venue that will draw foreign investment, revive Kaduna’s sporting heritage, and generate jobs for the youth.
Commissioned in 1964 and named after the late Premier of the Northern region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the stadium was once a central hub for Nigerian sports, hosting major international matches in the 1980s and 1990s and serving as home ground for top clubs and the national team.
Maiyaki recalled the era when Kaduna produced stars like Emmanuel and Celestine Babayaro, Tijani Babangida, and Garba Lawal, crediting the then-superior facilities for their rise.
He stressed that the project is not just for prestige but to create a sustainable economic asset. “Sports is big business,” he said. “A modernised ABS will attract sponsorships, host tournaments, boost tourism, and stimulate growth in hospitality, retail, and transportation, creating a far-reaching economic impact.”
