Jude Bellingham Faces Potential 12-Match Ban for Alleged Referee Insult
Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham could potentially face a 12-match suspension after an explicit outburst directed at the referee, which resulted in a red card during Saturday’s match against Osasuna.
The England international was dismissed by referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero in the 39th minute of Madrid’s 1-1 draw for using offensive language.
However, Bellingham insisted that he did not direct abusive language toward the referee, who claimed the young star told him, “F*** you.”
Bellingham clarified that he had actually said, “f*** off,” but maintained that the remark was directed at himself in a moment of frustration, not at the official.
Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti added after the match: ‘I think the referee did not understand Jude Bellingham’s English. He said “f*** off”, not “f*** you”… that’s way different.’
It remains uncertain whether Madrid will appeal the decision in an effort to overturn Bellingham’s red card.
If no appeal is made or successful, the 21-year-old could face a 12-match suspension, leaving him sidelined while his teammates continue to play.
The Spanish FA’s disciplinary Code tells that any player guilty of ‘insulting, offending, or addressing the main referee, assistants, fourth official, directors, or sports authorities in offensive terms or attitudes’ will be punished with a suspension of four to 12 matches.
Should the ban be upheld, Bellingham would miss several key matches for Madrid, including La Liga clashes against Girona, Betis, and Rayo Vallecano, as well as the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Sociedad.
