Jay-Z Sues Attorney Tony Buzbee for $20 Million Over False Rape Allegations
Hip-hop mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has filed a lawsuit against Texas-based attorney Tony Buzbee, alleging defamation, civil extortion, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
The lawsuit comes after a rape case filed against Jay-Z and fellow music executive Sean “Diddy” Combs was dismissed in October 2024.
Jay-Z alleges that the false accusations were strategically timed, filed just before his daughter Blue Ivy’s highly anticipated premiere of *Mufasa: The Lion King*, causing significant personal and financial harm, including the loss of $20 million in business contracts.
The original lawsuit, brought by a plaintiff identified as Jane Doe, accused Jay-Z and Diddy of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl at an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty in 2000.
These shocking claims sent ripples through the entertainment industry, attracting extensive media coverage and threatening Jay-Z’s reputation.
However, on February 14, 2025, the case was voluntarily dismissed with prejudice, ensuring that it cannot be reopened or refiled in the future.
In response, Jay-Z stated, “The frivolous, fictitious, and appalling allegations have been dismissed. The lawsuit was without merit and never going anywhere.”
The rap icon maintains that the timing of the lawsuit was deliberate and malicious, crafted to place him in an impossible position with no favorable outcome.
“I felt that Mr. Buzbee was placing a gun to my head—that I either bow to his demands or endure personal and financial ruin.”
According to Jay-Z, the lawsuit was strategically filed just hours before Blue Ivy’s significant moment at the premiere of *Mufasa: The Lion King*. As a devoted father, he had hoped to fully support his daughter during this milestone event, but the allegations risked overshadowing the occasion.
Jay-Z revealed that the false accusations cost him $20 million in lost contracts, as the scandal reportedly led to canceled business deals and endorsements, with companies pulling away amid the controversy.
The rapper, entrepreneur, and philanthropist also opened up about the intense psychological toll he endured, explaining that the lawsuit forced him into “hiding” to escape the relentless negative media attention.
He described the emotional distress as a deliberate attack on his character and legacy.
Through his lawsuit, Jay-Z is seeking financial compensation and hopes to establish a legal precedent to deter attorneys from exploiting the legal system for personal or professional gain.
