Israel Recovers Bodies of Three Hostages from Gaza After Hamas Abduction

As Israel deepens its military engagements on multiple fronts, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Saturday the recovery of the bodies of three hostages, two civilians and a soldier during a special operation in Gaza. The remains of Ofra Keidar, Yonatan Samerano, and Staff Sergeant Shay Levinson were retrieved more than 20 months after they were abducted during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks.

The IDF described the mission as a precision operation, part of ongoing efforts to recover Israeli hostages still held in the Gaza Strip. According to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, the development offers “some comfort to the families who have waited in agony, uncertainty, and doubt for 625 days.” However, the group stressed that the fight is far from over, urging the government to act swiftly to bring home the estimated 50 captives still in militant custody.

Samerano, remembered as a “talented DJ,” and Keidar, a 71-year-old resident of the Be’eri kibbutz where over 100 people were slain in the October massacre were among the 251 people kidnapped in the assault that also left approximately 1,200 Israelis dead. Israeli officials now believe that around 30 of the remaining hostages may no longer be alive.

Concerns are mounting among families of the captives that Israel’s widening conflict with Iran, which erupted on June 13 and has included U.S.-backed strikes on Iranian nuclear infrastructure, could overshadow rescue efforts in Gaza.

President Isaac Herzog addressed the issue on Sunday, reiterating calls for the “urgent release” of all remaining hostages. He framed Israel’s latest military maneuvers including the Gaza operation and broader regional action as part of a wider struggle to protect democratic values in the Middle East.

“This brave step serves the security and safety of the entire free world,” Herzog said in a statement posted on X. “I hope it will lead to a better future for the Middle East – and help advance the urgent release of our hostages held in captivity in Gaza.”

Not all agree with the government’s approach. Some families have voiced frustration over Israel’s decision to resume military operations in Gaza in March, believing it scuttled progress toward a ceasefire that could have secured the release of the remaining hostages. That truce deal, which stalled after Israel reportedly declined to proceed to its second phase, is still seen by many as the most viable route to ending the crisis.

Meanwhile, the toll of Israel’s prolonged Gaza campaign continues to mount. More than 55,000 Palestinians, the majority believed to be women and children have been killed since the war began, according to health officials in the territory.
