A male infant was kidnapped from a medical facility in Gboko, Benue State, on Tuesday. The child, who initially struggled to breathe upon delivery, was moved to a recovery ward after stabilizing. Shortly after arriving there, an unidentified woman approached the mother, claiming to be a nurse requiring the baby for further examination.
The suspect took the newborn toward the labour ward. Although the baby’s grandmother followed her, the woman insisted the grandmother step back. When the grandmother returned to check on the situation, the suspect and the infant had vanished. Staff members confirmed that the woman was not employed at the facility.
The incident triggered widespread alarm and brought local authorities to the scene to manage the crowd. DSP Peter Aondongu, the Police Public Relations Officer, verified on Wednesday that the matter has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi to facilitate a thorough inquiry.
