Hezbollah Appoints Sheikh Naim Qassem as New Leader Following Nasrallah’s Death
Hezbollah of Lebanon has officially appointed deputy leader Naim Qassem as the successor to Hassan Nasrallah, following Nasrallah’s death in an Israeli strike last month.
Qassem, who has been a longstanding deputy to Nasrallah, has been serving as the acting leader of the militant group since the death of Nasrallah.
“Hezbollah’s (governing) Shura Council agreed to elect… Sheikh Naim Qassem as secretary general of Hezbollah,” the Iran-backed group said in a statement, more than a month after Nasrallah’s killing.
Hezbollah has pledged to uphold Nasrallah’s policies “until victory is achieved.”
Hassan Nasrallah, the former leader of Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut in late September this year. Since then, multiple senior Hezbollah officials have also been targeted and killed in successive Israeli strikes on the outskirts of Beirut.
Independent Iranian media have reported that there is currently no confirmed information regarding Sheikh Naim Qassem’s whereabouts.
The appointment of a new Hezbollah leader occurs amid rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, raising concerns about further destabilization in the region.
