Hamas Returns Remains Of Three Hostages To Israel As Fragile Ceasefire Holds
Red Cross vehicles transported the bodies of three individuals, believed to be deceased hostages, from Gaza to the border with Israel on Sunday, marking the latest exchange under the ongoing ceasefire agreement.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the handover, stating that the remains would undergo forensic examination before families are officially notified. According to Hamas, the bodies were discovered earlier in the day inside a tunnel in southern Gaza.
Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, Hamas has released the remains of 17 hostages. With Sunday’s development, Israeli officials say 11 bodies are still being held in Gaza.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that one of the returned remains belonged to American-Israeli national Omer Neutra, a tank platoon leader believed to have been killed during the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Trump said he spoke with Neutra’s parents, describing their emotions as “a mix of relief and heartbreak.”
The exchange of remains has become one of the most sensitive elements of the U.S.-brokered truce. For each Israeli hostage returned, Israel has released the bodies of 15 Palestinians.

In Jerusalem, families of the missing continue to gather for weekly vigils, urging restraint and patience. “This cursed war has taken so many dear lives on both sides,” said Moran Harari, a friend of one of the deceased hostages, during a rally on Saturday.
Palestinian health officials, meanwhile, are struggling to identify the hundreds of bodies recovered from Gaza’s rubble due to the lack of DNA testing kits. Of the 225 Palestinian bodies returned since the ceasefire began, only 75 have been formally identified.
The ceasefire, now in its fifth week, forms part of a 20-point peace framework backed by the United States. The plan envisions an international stabilization force led by Arab and regional partners to secure Gaza’s borders and oversee long-term peace efforts.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu maintains that “pockets of Hamas” remain in Rafah and Khan Younis, pledging that they “will be eliminated.”
