U.S. Imposes Total Maritime Blockade on Iran After Peace Talks Collapse
The U.S. military has officially declared a total maritime blockade of all Iranian ports and coastal regions, effective Monday, April 13, 2026, at 10 a.m. ET.
This aggressive move follows the failure of high-stakes diplomatic negotiations in Islamabad over the weekend, which were intended to secure a permanent end to the six-week-old war.
The collapse of these talks—the first direct U.S.-Iran diplomatic meeting in more than ten years—has effectively shattered a fragile two-week ceasefire and moved the region back into a state of active hostility.
U.S. Central Command confirmed that the blockade will be enforced against every vessel attempting to enter or exit Iranian ports in the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, regardless of the ship’s country of origin.
While the U.S. military stated that neutral ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz to non-Iranian ports will not be obstructed, President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning that any vessel found paying transit tolls to Iran in international waters will be intercepted.
The President characterized such payments as illegal under the current conflict parameters. Furthermore, the U.S. Navy has been tasked with locating and destroying Iranian mines within the Strait to facilitate safer passage for neutral commercial traffic.
The immediate reaction from global markets was severe, with crude oil prices jumping over 7% to exceed $100 per barrel. Tehran has responded to the blockade by accusing Washington of “maximalism” during the failed negotiations and warning of a harsh retaliation.
Although President Trump suggested that the economic pressure might eventually force Iran back to the negotiating table, he acknowledged that high energy prices could remain a factor through the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
Military analysts remain cautious about the long-term sustainability of such an extensive maritime operation and the potential for the conflict to broaden further if commercial tankers continue to avoid the vital waterway.
