Free ChatGPT Users Get Access To Deep Research From Today, But With Restrictions
The Bad News? You Get Only Five Uses Per Month
Great news for ChatGPT free users! The highly anticipated Deep Research feature is now available, but with a twist. The version rolling out to free-tier users is described as “lightweight” and powered by ChatGPT o4-mini, as opposed to the full Deep Research experience used by Pro, Plus, Teams, and Enterprise users, which is powered by ChatGPT-o3.
While this new version may not have the same capabilities as the full-featured one, it still offers a great way for free-tier users to tap into advanced research tools, albeit in a more streamlined and accessible format. This change will provide more value to free users while still maintaining an upgraded experience for those on premium plans.
OpenAI describes the new lightweight Deep Research as “nearly as intelligent as the Deep Research people already know and love, while being significantly cheaper to serve.”
It seems like the new Deep Research feature for free-tier users comes with some limitations. According to OpenAI’s tweet, while the lightweight Deep Research tool (powered by ChatGPT o4-mini) is now available, it has a usage cap of five times per month. So, users will need to be strategic about when to use it.
The graph shared by OpenAI highlighted the accuracy rates of the lightweight version in comparison to both the original Deep Research and the o3 model, showing how each version stacks up. However, with the usage restriction, it’s important for free-tier users to make sure they reserve the new feature for their most crucial research needs!

OpenAI is indeed making some significant changes to Deep Research, expanding usage limits for Plus, Teams, and Enterprise users. The key takeaway here is that once users reach their 10 monthly uses of the original Deep Research tool, they will automatically transition to the lightweight version, which offers an additional 15 uses per month. This transition has led to some criticism from ChatGPT users on X, who feel the value doesn’t stack up well compared to competitors like Google’s Gemini, which offers up to 20 uses per day on its advanced plan.
The Deep Research feature allows users to give ChatGPT a task, and it will continue researching autonomously, producing a comprehensive report with citations. This tool is particularly effective for more complex queries, such as literature reviews, market research, and big decisions like choosing where to live.
Additionally, the announcement of expanded usage limits for Plus, Teams, and Enterprise users gives them 100 minutes of ChatGPT-o3 usage per week and 300 minutes of ChatGPT o4-mini per day, which adds more flexibility to their usage. However, for free users, the feature is still limited to 5 uses per month, which certainly makes the premium plans more attractive to those in need of deeper research capabilities.
