The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has placed four officers under arrest following claims that they coerced Dr. Musa Aliyu, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, into paying ₦53,000. This incident occurred during an unapproved stop-and-search activity in Abuja.
Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi announced the arrests on Monday. He stated that the officers deserted their designated patrol areas to establish an illegal checkpoint near the Banex district in Wuse. While at this unauthorized location, they stopped Dr. Aliyu and forced him to provide ₦53,000 via a Point of Sale terminal. The officers also required him to cover the transaction fees before dividing the money.
Sanusi condemned the behavior as criminal and a violation of police standards. An investigation began as soon as the incident was reported, eventually leading to the capture of the entire group. The commissioner noted that the officers face potential dismissal and severe disciplinary action.
Additionally, Sanusi reminded the public that the Inspector-General of Police has banned random searches of mobile phones by patrol units. He urged citizens to refuse such demands and to report any instances of harassment or extortion to the proper authorities through official emergency hotlines.
