On Monday, victims of the tragic canoe accident in Jigawa State were interred following Islamic customs, as rescue teams pushed forward with their hunt for those still unaccounted for.
The state government previously reported six confirmed fatalities and 23 successful rescues. Governor Umar Namadi joined state officials at the Malamawar Yandutse Juma’at Mosque in the Ringim Local Government Area to pay his final respects during funeral prayers. He offered sympathies to the affected families and requested divine peace for those lost in the incident.
To mitigate the risk of future disasters, Governor Namadi ordered that a bridge be built over the waterway immediately. The village head of Malamawar Yandutse, Umar Habibu, noted that while minor incidents happen annually, the community has never dealt with a catastrophe of this scale. He emphasized that building a bridge is essential, as the current reliance on canoes is forced by the lack of infrastructure. He further explained that a bridge would link 15 villages to major roads, streamlining the transit of both residents and agricultural goods to markets.
