Former Conservative Minister and Television Personality Ann Widdecombe Passes Away at 78

Ann Widdecombe, a long-serving former Conservative MP and reality television star, has died at age 78.

Ann Widdecombe, the former Conservative government minister who later aligned with Reform UK, has passed away at the age of 78. A prominent fixture in British politics, she gained widespread fame for her blunt personality and her unexpected transition into reality television, most notably her 2010 appearance on Strictly Come Dancing alongside partner Anton Du Beke.

Born in Bath in 1947, Widdecombe was educated at Birmingham and Oxford Universities. She served as the Member of Parliament for Maidstone for over two decades. Throughout her career, she maintained deeply conservative values, openly opposing abortion, gay rights, and assisted dying, while advocating for the restoration of the death penalty. Her political journey included roles as a prisons minister and shadow home secretary under William Hague.

Despite facing harsh public scrutiny regarding her appearance, she remained famously indifferent to critics. She was also noted for her sharp tongue, famously remarking that Michael Howard had “something of the night about him.” A dedicated animal rights advocate, she frequently challenged her own party’s stance on fox hunting.

Following her 2010 parliamentary retirement, she pursued a career in broadcasting and literature, appearing on Celebrity Big Brother and penning multiple novels. In 2013, she received a papal honour for her contributions to public life. She returned to the political arena in 2019 as a Brexit Party MEP and later served as an immigration and justice spokesperson for Reform UK.
