Fiji winger Jiuta Wainiqolo enters this Saturday’s international clash against England in exceptional form. Despite a 39-24 loss to Wales, Wainiqolo recorded an impressive 173 metres with the ball and successfully broke through 19 tackles. The 27-year-old previously sought a spot on the Fiji under-20 football squad, comparing his past striking ability to Harry Kane.
Wainiqolo topped the Top 14 try-scoring charts this season, outperforming his closest rival, Bordeaux Begles star Louis Bielle-Biarrey. While Bielle-Biarrey managed 13 tries, Wainiqolo crossed the line 18 times in 20 appearances for Lyon. Known for his evasive footwork and agility—which he attributes to his background in football drills—he has solidified his reputation as one of the world’s most formidable wings.
Reflecting on his career path, Wainiqolo rose to prominence during the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where he became Fiji’s top try-scorer in their gold-medal journey. His subsequent move to Toulon and then Lyon provided him the regular game time necessary to flourish. At Lyon, he plays alongside English teammate Sam Simmonds, whom he identifies as a key leader.
As Fiji prepares to face England, Wainiqolo believes his team can succeed by utilizing a physical game plan similar to South Africa’s approach. Having witnessed Fiji’s historic 2023 victory over England from the sidelines, the winger is eager to bring his explosive pace and offensive creativity to Twickenham this weekend.
