Jamie George trusts England’s youthful bench against South Africa

England captain Jamie George is placing his faith in a youthful, less experienced bench to help overcome South Africa in Saturday’s Test match in Johannesburg.

England captain Jamie George has expressed confidence in his team’s inexperienced bench as they prepare to face South Africa in Johannesburg this Saturday. With England hoping to end a three-match losing streak against the Springboks, George believes his younger replacements are ready to make a significant impact in the final quarter of the game.

The squad features several players with limited international experience, including Beno Obano, Asher Opoku-Fordjour, Henry Pollock, and Guy Pepper, who collectively have very few caps. While some, such as Charlie Ewels, have more experience, they have seen little playing time recently. Despite this, George insists the players are eager for the challenge and fully understand the game plan developed after their strong performance against France.

Addressing concerns about the team’s depth, George explained that clear instruction helps the newcomers feel prepared rather than intimidated. The bench strategy marks a shift from 2025, when head coach Steve Borthwick relied on seasoned veterans like Ellis Genge and Tom Curry. Injuries to key players such as Will Stuart, Fin Baxter, and Bevan Rodd, combined with Maro Itoje’s rest period, have forced this rotation.

South Africa has also opted for a mix of experience and youth on their bench. Former England fly-half Paul Grayson noted that the match provides a major opportunity for players like Pollock to prove themselves. The game, set to take place at Ellis Park, will be a critical test for England’s current squad as they look to build momentum and revitalize their international standing.
