Dillon Lewis returns to Wales squad to bolster key position

Dillon Lewis is back in the Wales squad after a two-year wait, aiming to solve the team’s ongoing tight-head prop shortage during the upcoming summer internationals.

After a two-year absence from the international stage, tight-head prop Dillon Lewis is set to return to the Wales setup. The 30-year-old, who transferred from Harlequins to the Dragons in 2025, has been recalled for the upcoming summer Nations Championship matches against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa.

Before these competitive fixtures, Lewis will feature in an uncapped game against the Barbarians this Saturday. His last appearance for his country occurred during the 2024 Six Nations against Italy, marking his 57th cap. Reflecting on his hiatus, Lewis noted that persistent injuries hindered his availability, but he remained determined to rejoin the squad.

Lewis previously played for Cardiff before his stint at Harlequins, where he felt he became a more rounded athlete. His move to the Dragons was motivated by a desire to secure a place in the national team ahead of the World Cup. He is now training under new scrum coach Paul James and staff, finding the updated team culture and outlook refreshing.

The current Wales squad faces a shortage at the tight-head position. Tomas Francis is being rested, while Archie Griffin remains sidelined after surgery and Keiron Assiratti withdrew due to a calf injury. Lewis, alongside Sam Wainwright and Ben Warren, now has a significant chance to prove his value on the international field.
