FIFA Confirms Nigeria vs South Africa World Cup Qualifier for Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein

FIFA has confirmed that Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa will take place at the 46,000-capacity Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. Nigerian time.

The venue, once known as Vodacom Park and later Free State Stadium, is a historic site that hosted matches during the 2010 World Cup. The fixture, part of matchday eight in Group C, is crucial for both nations, especially Nigeria, who are still chasing qualification.

The Super Eagles will first host Rwanda in Uyo on September 6 before travelling to South Africa. With only the group winners guaranteed a spot at the 2026 tournament in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, this match is key in shaping the group’s final outcome.

South Africa lead the group with 13 points, while Nigeria sit fourth with seven points after a shaky start that includes just one win in six games.

The group also includes Benin, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Lesotho. While the group leader qualifies automatically, the second-placed team may still advance through CAF and intercontinental play-offs.

Despite their poor form, Nigeria remain in the race, with four matches left: Rwanda (home), South Africa (away), Lesotho (away), and Benin (home). The reverse leg against South Africa ended 1–1 in Uyo, and Nigeria must secure victory in Bloemfontein to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
