Fatal Israeli Airstrike Targets Apartment Building in Gaza.

Israeli airstrikes have targeted a residential building in the Shijaiyah area of northern Gaza, killing at least 23 people, including eight women and eight children, according to the Al-Ahly hospital and Gaza’s Health Ministry. The strike hit a four-storey building, and rescue teams are currently searching for survivors under the rubble.

The Israeli military stated that the attack targeted a senior Hamas militant allegedly responsible for orchestrating attacks from the area. Israel attributes civilian casualties to Hamas’s presence in densely populated urban areas, accusing the group of using civilians as human shields.

In recent days, Israel has intensified its military campaign in Gaza, issuing evacuation orders for several areas, including Shijaiyah, and tightening its blockade on food, fuel, and humanitarian aid. The military has also declared its intent to seize parts of Gaza and establish a new security corridor through the territory.

Earlier this week, Hamas launched its heaviest barrage of rockets since the collapse of the temporary ceasefire, firing 10 projectiles toward southern Israel.

The fighting resumed last month after an eight-week truce that had brought some relief to Palestinians in Gaza and allowed for increased humanitarian aid. During that pause, 25 Israeli hostages were freed and the remains of eight others returned, in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Efforts by mediators to broker another ceasefire that would lead to further hostage releases and a potential path toward ending the conflict have so far failed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists no deal will be made until Hamas is defeated, while Hamas has said it won’t release the remaining 59 hostages — 24 of whom are believed to be alive — until the war ends.

The conflict, sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks that killed 1,200 people in Israel and saw 250 taken hostage, has since escalated into the deadliest period in Israeli-Palestinian history. The war has devastated Gaza, where more than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the territory’s health ministry. The ministry says over half of the casualties are women and children, though it does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Amid the continuing humanitarian crisis, regional and international tensions have grown. Netanyahu recently met with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, where they reiterated support for the hostages’ families but revealed little about any imminent peace plan. Trump’s suggestion of relocating Gaza’s population has alarmed U.S. allies and human rights organizations, though the idea has been met with approval by Israeli officials.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu faces pressure from his far-right coalition partners to continue the military campaign until Hamas is entirely dismantled — a goal that has not yet been achieved 18 months into the war.
