Edo Police Command Affirms Dismissal of Female Officer is Justified
The Edo State Police Command has announced the dismissal of Inspector Edith Uduma, stating that she exploited the case of Sgt. Abraham, who allegedly raped a female suspect, to extort money instead of reporting the incident through official channels.
In a statement on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, explained that Uduma and her husband, Inspector Ibrahim Mohammed, attempted to demand N1 million from Abraham in exchange for covering up the incident.
“The Edo State Police Command deems it necessary to set the records straight regarding this subject matter,” Yamu said.
He stated that Uduma, who was the Charge Room Officer on duty the night of the alleged incident, failed to report the matter to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) or the Incident Duty Officer.
Instead, Yamu claimed she “took advantage of the situation to enrich herself,” calling her husband to assist in extorting Abraham.
Yamu’s statement also revealed that Sgt. Abraham offered only N45,000 in response to their demand. Unsatisfied with this amount, Uduma and Mohammed then chose to report Abraham’s misconduct to the DPO and share a video of the incident on social media.
“Following these events, an orderly room trial was initiated against all the officers, which led to the dismissal of Sgt. Abraham and Insp. Edith Uduma,” Yamu disclosed.
Inspector Ibrahim Mohammed was demoted to the rank of sergeant due to his involvement in the case.
The police command warned against “propaganda, disinformation, or misinformation” intended to absolve Uduma or her husband, emphasizing that any dissatisfied party has the right to appeal the decision in accordance with the Police Act and Regulation.
