Donald Trump has joined the ranks of those questioning the tactical choices made by England manager Thomas Tuchel during their World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina. While attending a New York reception with FIFA head Gianni Infantino, the former US president remarked on England’s shift to a defensive posture after initially taking the lead.
Trump mentioned his past experience golfing with England captain Harry Kane, noting that the decision to prioritize defense hampered the team. Although acknowledging his lack of coaching expertise, Trump suggested that playing offensively is more effective. Tuchel faced widespread backlash for substituting two strikers for defenders late in the match, a move that allowed Lionel Messi to exploit open space and facilitate two Argentine goals.
In response to the criticism, Tuchel maintained that he does not regret his tactical adjustments. He explained that his intent was to support the squad because he felt they were becoming overly passive as the game progressed.
