British Eventing has confirmed that two riders lost their lives following accidents during separate competitions held on Saturday. The organization expressed deep sorrow over the tragedies.
Sophie Fouracre, aged 34, suffered fatal injuries during a cross-country run while riding Rhubarbsfox Brittania at the Swalcliffe Park event in Oxfordshire. Later the same day, 42-year-old Kerry Donoghue died while competing on her horse, Carneyhaugh Rua, at a cross-country event in Penrith, Cumbria. Medical personnel were dispatched immediately to both locations, but were unable to revive either individual.
Rosie Williams, the chief executive of British Eventing, shared the community’s grief, offering condolences to the families and friends of both victims. She also thanked the emergency crews and event staff for their efforts during these difficult situations. Both competitions were abandoned for the weekend, and officials have confirmed that the horses involved were not injured. Investigations into both incidents are currently underway.
The charity Riders Minds has reached out to the equestrian community to provide mental health support. While fatalities are uncommon in the sport, these events follow recent losses, including professional rider Georgie Campbell earlier in 2024 and Sarah Yorke in 2023.
