Discipline Isn’t Abuse – Harrison Gwamnishu Reacts to Viral Video of Woman Beating Child
Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu has condemned a disturbing viral video showing a woman brutally assaulting a young girl in Lagos State.
The video, which has sparked public outrage, captures the woman slapping, flogging, and violently slamming the child onto the floor—all reportedly over a dispute involving plates. The girl’s cries for help were ignored as the woman continued the assault.
In response, Gwamnishu announced that his team would visit the home to assess the child’s condition and file a formal report with the police. He emphasized that such behaviour goes far beyond discipline and violates the Child Rights Act.
“Many parents don’t realize that some actions at home are criminal,” he said. “Ignorance of the law is no excuse. What we saw is not discipline—it is abuse, plain and brutal.”
He urged all parents and guardians to educate themselves on children’s rights and to prioritize the well-being and dignity of every child—whether theirs or not.
“This child could be yours, mine, or anyone’s. We must all speak out and act when we see this kind of cruelty,” he concluded.
