China Holds Military Drills Focusing On Taiwan Strait

China has carried out military drills around Taiwan for a second day, focusing on the Taiwan Strait, which is a key waterway for international trade and separates Taiwan from China. These exercises are seen as a demonstration of China’s military power and its ongoing claim over Taiwan, which it considers a breakaway province, despite Taiwan functioning as a self-governing island democracy. The drills have raised concerns about rising tensions in the region and the potential for further escalation.

China conducted a second day of military drills around Taiwan on Wednesday, focusing on the Taiwan Strait, a vital waterway that separates Taiwan from China and plays a crucial role in global trade. The military exercises, named Strait Thunder-2025A, took place in the middle and southern regions of the Taiwan Strait, as reported by a spokesperson from the People’s Liberation Army.

Taiwan’s military is closely monitoring the situation but reported no unusual activity on the island. Taiwan, which operates as a self-governing democracy with a population of 23 million, is claimed by China as part of its territory.

The drills were designed to test Chinese military capabilities in various areas, including identification and verification, warning and expulsion, interception and detention, as well as precision strikes on key targets. The exercises were intended to demonstrate China’s ability to enforce area control, carry out joint blockades, and execute targeted precision strikes. A spokesperson from China’s Eastern Theater Command shared these details on the Chinese Defense Ministry’s Weibo account.

Taiwan reported on Wednesday that 76 military aircraft and 19 naval or government ships had entered the waters and airspace near the island over the past 24 hours. Among these, 37 planes crossed the Taiwan Strait’s center line, a 160-kilometer (110-mile) wide zone considered an unofficial border, which China does not recognize.

Additionally, China’s Shandong aircraft carrier group entered Taiwan’s air defense identification zone, a self-defined area closely monitored by Taiwan’s military.

China has been regularly sending warplanes and navy vessels near Taiwan, and in recent years, the scale and intensity of these exercises have increased. Taiwanese officials have expressed concerns that China might be preparing for a surprise attack under the guise of these military drills.

Such an escalation could potentially involve the United States, which has a network of alliances in the region, provides Taiwan with advanced weapons, and is legally committed to responding to any threats to the island.

“Once again, China’s aggressive military activities and rhetoric toward Taiwan only serve to exacerbate tensions and put the region’s security and the world’s prosperity at risk,” State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said.

“In the face of China’s intimidation tactics and destabilizing behavior, the United States’ enduring commitment to our allies and partners, including Taiwan, continues.”

Taiwan has established a central response group to closely monitor China’s ongoing military exercises, according to Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office stated that the military drills were aimed at Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, who is strongly pro-independence. Polls show that the vast majority of Taiwan’s residents reject the possibility of Chinese rule and support the current status of Taiwan’s independence.

The division between Taiwan and China dates back 76 years to the Chinese Civil War, but tensions have escalated significantly since 2016 when China severed nearly all communications with Taipei.
